The Angel's Game
We see the life of David Martin from abused youth to young writer to the twisted novelist who pens his life's work after he makes his deal with the Devil. Martin has a benefactor in the person of a French publisher by the name of Andreas Corelli. He descends several levels during the story: when purchases a house with a mysterious history, his inability to have his one true love, and his agreement to work with Corelli that his life turns completely upside down. It is a very dark story of human descent, and potential for redemption. The Angel's Game turns out to be the second novel in a four part series focusing on the darker side of Barcelona in the early part of the 20th century. As a Spaniard, Zafon writes in his native language, and this is only the second novel translated into English. He has a tremendous talent; reading his works are not a light read, so don't dive into this or other Zafon works unless you are ready to spend some time. I anxiously waited for this book since I read his first novel, The Shadow of the Wind, a couple of years ago. I lost sleep for a couple of nights as I could not put this book down. He has six more novels completed in Spanish.
